Stephanie Hesketh - Paper Cut artist

Paper.
So often looked upon but rarely seen.

My pieces are created solely by hand, cutting unique shapes from individual sheets of paper, which, when brought together reveal an almost topographical image.

The different types of paper I use take on their own characteristics and attributes, which define my cuts with highlights and shadows. I focus on utilising these qualities, allowing the paper to take on its own natural form after the cutting has taken place.

For me, creating my works has almost become a form of meditation as I completely immerse myself in the creation process. I believe that the time and skills it takes to create these works are part of the beauty of the final image.

Since developing this style I have found myself ever drawn towards far eastern imagery and lifestyle, Buddhism in particular. My works have unconciously followed one of the Buddhist notions of exsistance, in that you cannot exist if it wasn't for the world around you. My work would not exist if it wasn't for the paper surrounding it. The paper is the positive space and my work is the negative. Without the positive there can be no negative.
